SURPRISE, Ariz. – No. 27 BYU-Hawaii men's tennis fell 5-1 in its semifinal Friday against No. 11 Azusa Pacific at the PacWest Men's Tennis Championships at the Surprise Tennis Complex.

The Seasiders' (17-7) Sterling Galli and Chia-Hua Lu gave an early test to No. 2 Oliver Frank and Pascal Engel in No. 1 doubles, but the Cougars' (20-3) duo was able to hold on for an 8-6 win to open the scoring. Christian Schmid and Shepherd Newcomb added an 8-4 victory for Azusa on the second court, while Ibrahim Karmadzha and Ian Galli claimed the sole point for BYU-Hawaii with a 9-7 win at No. 3 doubles.

No. 1 Frank took the first singles match 6-2, 6-1 for the Cougars and Antonio Pejic added a 6-0, 6-3 victory on court six to put them within a point of the victory. No. 17 Chrisitan Schmid battled back from an early deficit to No. 38 Guillermo Ucelay Pueyo to clinch the victory with a 6-4, 6-0 win on court two.

Simon Guillin and Ibrahim Karmadzha each won the first sets in the unfinished matches, while Lu dropped a narrow 6-4 decision.

The Seasiders will take on Hawaii Hilo Saturday at 9 a.m. MST in the third place match at the Surprise Tennis Complex. The Vulcans fell to Hawaii Pacific 5-0 in their semifinal on Friday. Live stats will be available online.
