LAIE, Hawaii – No. 26 BYU-Hawaii men's tennis defeated Southern New Hampshire 8-1 Wednesday at BYU-Hawaii Tennis Courts.
The Seasiders (10-3) started strong in tennins play as Sterling Galli and Chia-Hua Lu defeated Ricardo Marreiros and Miguel Marreiros 8-4 on court one. Ibrahim Karmadzha and Ian Galli also collected an 8-4 win for BYU-Hawaii and Simon Guillin and Guillermo Ucelay Pueyo came out on top 8-6 for the Seasiders.
Lu grabbed the first match of singles play for BYU-Hawaii 6-2, 6-0 over Miguel Marreiros. Tsu-Ping Kuang came out on top 6-2, 5-2 after his opponent retired early. After Guilin won the first set 6-4 in his singles match the play transitioned to pro sets with the light fading fast and Guillin took two of the next three sets for the match.
Karmadzha defeated Xavier Aubron 8-3 to keep things rolling for the Seasiders. S. Galli took an early lead over Tiago Fernandes, but Fernandes responded to take a 5-4 lead. S. Galli held serve to tie and broke for the 6-5 lead on his way to winning the final four games for the 8-5 victory.
The Penmen's (6-4) Ricardo Marreriros broke serve early to hold a 5-4 lead on No. 2 singles, but Ucelay broke serve twice to turn the tables and take a brief 7-6 lead before Marreiros rallied and the match went to the tiebreaker. Marrieros jumped ahead early and held off a late rally by Ucelay to win the tiebreaker for the 9-8 (5) victory.
BYU-Hawaii will take the court Thursday at 1 p.m. HST to face Colgate at the BYU-Hawaii Tennis Courts. Live scoring will be available online.
