KAILUA KONA, Hawaii – BYU-Hawaii men's tennis had its second close victory over Hawaii Hilo this week as they finished 5-4 Saturday at the Holua Tennis Center.
Vaclav Slezak and Gregory Zukeran won 8-3 over the Seasiders' (3-1) Sterling Galli and Chia-Hua Lu, while the other two doubles matches went to pro set tiebreakers. Vulcans (1-2) Bruno Figlia and Alex Fillat Perez topped Guillermo Ucelay Pueyo and Simon Guillin 9-8 (8-6). BYU-Hawaii grabbed its only doubles victory as Ian Galli and Ibrahim Karmadzha outlasted Daniel Tada and Stefan Coney in a 9-8 (7-1) match.
Slezak remained undefeated as he beat Karmadzha 6-3, 6-1 on court one. I. Galli retired from his match against Ryuta Ogawa to give Hilo their fourth victory.
S. Galli took his match to three sets before overcoming Zukeran 6-4, 2-6, 6-0. Ucelay Pueyo won 6-2, 6-0 on court two, while Lu conquered his Vulcan opponent 6-2, 6-2. Guillin also took a straight sets victory over his opponent 6-2, 6-4.
BYU-Hawaii will play at Hope International University Monday Feb. 27 at 12 p.m. PST.
