KONA, Hawaii – No. 26 BYU-Hawaii men's tennis fell in a tight 6-3 match with No. 13 UC San Diego Friday at Holua Tennis Center.
Hua Chia Lu and Sterling Galli reached match point against UC San Diego's Marc Isaia and Alexandre Miaule, but were unable to close out the match falling 9-8 (7) on the first double court. Guillermo Ucelay and Simon Guillin got the first Seasider win with an 8-2 victory over Edvin Larsson and Sreeganesh Manoharan in the second court. The last doubles court, Ibrahim Karmadzha and Ian Galli were overtaken by Eric Tseng and Justin Zhang 8-3 to give UC San Diego the 2-1 lead going into singles play.
No. 36 Eric Tseng beat Sterling Galli 6-3, 6-1 in the first singles match, and Alexandre Miaule was able to fight off Ucelay 7-6 (3), 6-1 on the second court. Karmadzha fell to Zhang 6-2, 7-6 (4) to secure the UC San Diego victory, while in the fourth court Lu brought a point to the Seasiders with a 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (11) win. Guillin also took home a win over Marius Ruh in a 6-2, 6-0 victory on the fifth court, before Tsu-Ping Kuang fell to Manoharan 7-6 (1), 6-1 in the sixth court.
The Seasiders stay on the Big Island to face Hawaii Hilo on Saturday at 8 a.m. HST.
