KAILUA KONA, Hawaii – BYU-Hawaii men's tennis started the 2017 season with a 6-3 victory over Hawaii Hilo Wednesday at the Holua Tennis Center.
Sterling Galli and Chia-Hua Lu combined for an 8-5 win in doubles on the first court against Gregory Zukeran and Vaclav Slezak. Guillermo Ucelay Pueyo and Simon Guillin had the next BYU-Hawaii (1-0) triumph over the Vulcans (0-1) as they won 8-2 on court two. The only Hilo doubles defeat came on court three when Bruno Figlia and Dillon Lam overcame the Seasiders 8-3.
Slezak took control on the first singles court as he beat Sterling Galli 6-1, 6-2 to add another for the Vulcans. Ucelay Pueyo defeated Zukeran 6-2, 6-1 and Ibrahim Karmadzha toppled Stefan Coney 6-1, 6-2.
Figlia recorded his second win for Hilo, defeating Guillin 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 10-2. Lu and Tsu-Ping Kuang secured the victory for the Seasiders as they finished their matches 7-6, 4-6, 10-5 and 6-4, 6-4, respectively.
BYU-Hawaii will remain on the Big Island to face Sonoma State tomorrow at 2 p.m. HST.
