LAIE, Hawaii – No. 16 BYU-Hawaii men's tennis started the season with a 7-2 victory over Hawaii Hilo on Thursday.
The Seasiders swept in doubles play with Guillermo Ucelay and Simon Guillen upsetting the Vulcans 8-1. Peng Dai and Wei-Feng Lee won 8-2 and Colton Pate and Ibrahim Karmadzha overcame their Hilo opponents 8-5.
Lee defeated Gregory Zukeran 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 and Guillen won his match over Ryuta Ogawa 3-6, 6-4, 10-7. Dai took over the court in a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Daniel Tada and Pate finished 6-0, 6-4 against Ryan Torio.
Hilo's Kainoa Rosa upset Karmadzha in a close 6-2, 2-6, 10-8 match and Ucelay fell 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 to Vulcan Stefan Coney.
The Seasiders return to the court on Friday for a rematch against Hawaii Hilo at 9 a.m. HST.
