SURPRISE, Ariz. – In their first match of the PacWest Championship tournament, No. 17 BYU-Hawaii men's tennis overcame Sonoma State University 5-2 on Thursday afternoon.
No. 20 doubles partners Yevhen Zakharov and Martin Chojnacki fell 8-6 to Philip Holbrook and Noah Lee. Wei-Feng Lee and Peng Dai defeated Blaine Mengert and Logan Liddell in an 8-5 match. Ibrahim Karmadzhe and Colton Pate topped Sullivan Roche and Matt Weeber 8-3 to put the Seasiders (15-8) ahead.
Holbrook overcame No. 39 Chojnacki in a 6-0, 6-0 match to give the Seawolves (4-15) their only singles win. Karmadzhe overcame Mengert 6-3, 7-6(7-5) and Lee defeated Daniel Holz 6-2, 6-2. Dai's 6-2, 7-5 win over Vincent Paganetti secured the BYU-Hawaii win and all other matches were left unfinished.
The Seasiders will face Azusa Pacific in the semifinals tomorrow at 9 a.m. MST.
