SAN DIEGO, Calif. - No. 19 BYU-Hawaii men's tennis overcame No. 45 Point Loma in a close 5-4 match on Monday afternoon at the Point Loma Tennis Courts.
In the first singles match, No. 40 Yevhen Zakharov lost a 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 competition to No. 37 Andrew Stabb. No. 43 Martin Chojnacki was able to pull out a nail-biter over No. 39 Martin Blaho 6-2, 6-7 (7), 7-6 (5). Ibrahim Karmadzhe's 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (6) win over James Tenbroeck propelled the Seasiders into the lead.
Wei-Feng Lee took a 6-4, 6-2 victory versus Daniel Millikan. Peng Dai lost a 7-6 (5), 6-2 match against CJ Erion. A 6-4, 6-4 win by Seasider Taylor De Hoyas over Sea Lion Jack Alston finished out singles play.
No. 6 doubles Chojnacki and Zakharov were unable to take the lead in an 8-2 heartbreaker to the Sea Lions. Dai and Lee powered past their Point Loma competitors in a 9-7 match to give BYU-Hawaii the fifth and decisive point. Doubles play ended with an 8-6 loss by Karmadzha and Colton Pate.
The Seasiders head to Vanguard to play on Tuesday at 3 p.m. PST.
