Seasiders too much for Eagles

LA MIRADA, Calif. – BYU-Hawaii men's tennis started its southern California trip on the right foot with an 8-1 victory over Biola on Saturday afternoon.

No. 40 Yevhen Zakharov started off singles play with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Tayven Townsend. In a 6-2, 6-1 match, No. 43 Martin Chojnacki shut out Brandon Chang on the second singles court.

After each winning one set, Ibrahim Karmadzha was able to overcome Philip Westwood in a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10) match. A 6-2, 6-2 win by Wei-Feng Lee against Luke Mountain increased the Seasiders' lead. Another 6-3, 6-3 triumph came from Peng Dai in his match against Joe Turnquist. Taylor De Hoyas closed out singles play with another nail-biter, in a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (12) victory over David Garcia.

Power pairing No. 6 Chojnacki and Zakharov took the 8-6 advantage over their Biola competitors. Dai and Lee had the 8-4 shut out over the Eagles, but Karmadzha and Colton Pate were unable to take the lead in the only loss of the day at 9-7.

BYU-Hawaii heads to San Diego to take on No. 45 Point Loma on Monday at 3 p.m. PST.
