Seasider men's tennis uses depth to overcome Vulcans

HOULUA, Hawaii – No. 19 BYU-Hawaii men's tennis defeated Hawaii Hilo 7-2 in their first away match of the season on Wednesday afternoon at the Holua Tennis Center.

In singles play, No. 40 Yevhen Zakharov split the first two sets with Kainoa Rosa 7-6 (6), 5-7 in a tight battle, but lost the tiebreaking set 1-0 (8). No. 43 Martin Chojnacki won a quick 6-0, 6-1 match over Hilo's Kallen Mizuguchi.

Taylor De Hoyas defeated Nicolas Franco 6-2, 6-3 in his first match of the 2015 season, while teammate Peng Dai won 6-4, 6-1 over the Vulcan's Daniel Tada. Wei-Feng Lee extended the Seasider lead with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Hilo's Brandon Kang and BYU-Hawaii's Ibrahim Karmadzha overcame Stefan Coney in a 6-3, 6-2 match.

The Seasider doubles pairing of Colton Pate and Karmadhza shut out the Vulcans with a quick 8-0 match. Dai and Lee defeated their Vulcan opponents 8-3. Nationally ranked No. 6 partners Chojnacki and Zakharov fell 8-6 to their challengers from Hilo.

The Seasiders will face Sonoma State at the Holua Tennis Center on Thursday at 1 p.m. HST.
