Four seed Marika Kobayashi won both her matches, defeating Irina Morozova, 6-4, 6-3 and then edging out the seven-seed Leora Hemmerich of Cal State LA 7-6(1), 6-4 to move on to tomorrow's semifinals.
Marietta Tuionetoa won her first match of the day over Nina Gajdosikova, 6-1, 6-2. Tuionetoa, the five seed fell to two-seeded Sara Celma from Sonoma State in the next round, 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles, Tuionetoa and Kobayashi were able to win both their matches, including the second over Celma and her partner, Kaitlynn Haitcock, 8-4 to advance to the championship match on Saturday.
Over on the men's side, two-seeded Martin Chojnacki won both singles matches, defeating Max Dutreix, 6-2, 6-4 and finished off Azusa Pacific's Gary Yam 6-2, 5-7, 10-7. Chojnacki moves on to the semifinals Saturday against another APU player, Jan Meyer.
Yevhen Zakharov's day came to an end in the quarterfinals. After defeating Matt Roberts 6-3, 3-6, 11-9, Zakharov came up short to Fresno Pacific's Kyle Rowe 4-6, 6-7(5).
The men's doubles run also came to an end in the quarterfinals. Zakharov and Chojnacki advanced past the Leahy-Remmington team from APU but fell to Rowe and his partner Thomas Gely.
Kobayashi will play again Saturday in quest of a singles title and again with Tuionetoa to try and add a doubles championship. Chojnacki will represent the men as action continues throughout the day Saturday.
