SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – BYU-Hawaii men's soccer defeated Dominican University of California 2-1 in its final match of the season.
Daniel Corbett and Edgar Mesa Perez each scored for BYU-Hawaii (6-6-4, 5-5-3 PacWest). Mesa Perez also had two more shots, one of which was on goal. Besser Davila had two shots, one on goal, and keeper Dwayne Wittman (3-4-2) made three saves.
Matt Case scored Dominican's (4-13-1, 4-8-1 PacWest) only goal while keeper Oscar O'Con recorded two saves.
The Seasiders and the Penguins had an equal four shots on goal. Dominican had 11 total shots compared to BYU-Hawaii's six.
Both teams were held scoreless for the entire first half. The only scoring opportunity came when Davila took the first shot for the Seasiders in the 21st minute on frame, but O'Con came through with the save.
Corbett sparked the offense in the second half. Corbett beat O'Con in a race for the ball in the 52nd minute, touching the ball behind the keeper and then tapping it in for the 1-0 lead.
The Penguins tied the score three minutes later when Wittman came out towards the left side and Case got a touch and broke towards the middle to send the ball into the back netting.
In the 57th minute, Jaden Bybee sent a free kick into the box and Mesa Perez put his head on it to score his third goal of the season and give the Seasiders the 2-1 advantage.
The Seasiders limited the Penguins Scoring opportunities in the final 30 minutes to hold on to the victory.
