LAIE, Hawaii – BYU-Hawaii men's soccer finished its final home game in a 1-1 tie with Azusa Pacific Monday at the BYU-Hawaii soccer field.
Braden Bailey led the Seasiders (5-5-4, 4-4-3 PacWest) with three total shots and two on goal. Peter Puertas and Jake McRae each finished with two shots. Daniel Corbett scored his first goal of the season.
Azusa Pacific's (6-5-3, 6-3-1 PacWest) Kaleb Armbrust recorded three total shots, while Callum Wallace's two shots resulted in the Cougars' goal.
BYU-Hawaii made 12 shots, holding the Cougars to nine, but each team recorded three shots on goal. The game became heated, leading to 16 fouls and one red card for Azusa Pacific, while the Seasiders ended with six fouls.
In the fourth minute, Wallace ripped a shot outside the box off an assist from Tim Ogunniyi that rolled over the top of the keeper's hands and into the goal for an early 1-0 Azusa Pacific lead. After two more shots by the Cougars, McRae had a chance to equalize for BYU-Hawaii, but his header went off the post.
Daniel Corbett took the ball from the Azusa Pacific center back in the 33rd minute and beat keeper Jorge Pesquera (3-1-2) to tie the game. Two minutes later, Bailey had a shot that Pesquera saved before ending the half with a wide ball.
Puertas started the second period with a shot that went off the post to preserve the tie. Bailey put another shot on goal in the 72nd minute that Pesquera kept out of the net.
Armbrust went in for a shot in the 93rd minute that Dwayne Wittman (2-3-2) saved. Besser Davila's shot was blocked in the 104th minute. One minute later the Seasiders looked to have the golden goal when Garcia broke away from the defense, but McRae was unable to corral his pass in front of the net and the Cougar defense was able to clear the ball to preserve the tie.
The Seasiders head to California for their final road trip to play Holy Names Nov. 3 at 10:30 a.m. PDT. Live stats will be available online.
