Seasiders overwhelm Urban Knights defense

SAN FRANCISCO – BYU-Hawaii men's soccer kicked off PacWest play with a 5-0 sweep of Academy of Art Tuesday at the Beach Chalet Soccer Field.

Five different players scored for the Seasiders (2-1-1, 1-0 PacWest). Jake McRae and Kyle Oertel led BYU-Hawaii with a goal and assist each. Bobby Gutierrez recorded two shots to lead the Urban Knights (0-5-1, 0-1 PacWest).

The Seasiders finished with 16 total shots and 11 on goal, holding the Urban Knights to eight shots with one on goal. The 5-0 win was the best by the Seasiders since a 5-0 victory over Dixie State in 2014.

A corner kick from Mason Reid in the 11th minute found McRae who chipped it behind the defense to Peter Puertas. Puertas put a shot on frame that Kevin Mendez was able to stop, but the rebound came back to Puertas who put it in the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. In the 18th minute a loose ball ricocheted off the keeper and landed in front Reid who tapped it in to extend BYU-Hawaii's advantage to 2-0.

Academy of Art's lone shot on goal came from Gutierrez in the 20th minute, but BYU-Hawaii keeper Dwayne Wittman kept it out of the net. Andrew Deans had an opportunity for the Urban Knights, but his shot went wide before Gutierrez followed with a second shot that was blocked.

Oertel got behind the defense in the 34th minute and put a perfect cross to Braden Bailey, who put it in the right corner of the box for a 3-0 lead. Six minutes later, Kason Binford found Oertel at the top of the box with a pass and Oertel scored straight on from 10 yards out to cap the four goal first half.

The Seasiders kept the offensive pressure going in the second half as McRae and Puertas made back-to-back shots just after the 60-minute mark, but Mendez kept them out of the back of the net. Besser Davila came in with a shot in the 68th minute and Mendez was unable to secure the save, giving McRae the scoring opportunity off the rebound to put the Seasiders up 5-0.

BYU-Hawaii will continue its road trip Thursday at Notre Dame de Namur at 12:30 p.m. PDT. Live stats will be available online.
