LAIE, Hawaii – Jake McRae led a strong offensive effort in the second half to lead BYU-Hawaii men's soccer to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Chaminade Tuesday at the BYU-Hawaii soccer field.
Micah Mokulehua scored the goal for Chaminade (0-1), while Guilherme Aires recorded the assist and three shots.
BYU-Hawaii finished with 13 total shots, holding the Silverswords to seven. Both goalkeepers had three saves. The Seasiders had eight corner kicks, while the Silverswords ended with one.
After equalizing early in the second half, Zaugg found himself inside the six in th 67th minute with the ball and kicked it at the net where it hit McRae in the midsection before bouncing in. McRae was awarded his second goal of the game and the Seasiders held the 2-1 lead for good.
Chaminade's keeper Bernd Buescherhoff kept the ball away from the net early in the game as Seasiders McRae and Besser Davila put shots on goal in the first 20 minutes.
Aires made the first shot for the Silverswords, but keeper Dwayne Wittman got his hands on it before Mokulehua capitalized on the rebound to put it past Wittman, taking the 1-0 lead for Chaminade in the 32nd minute.
As BYU-Hawaii looked to equalize minutes before half, a third consecutive corner kick by Henrio found the head of Griffin Garcia, but went wide right to keep it 1-0 in favor of the Silverswords at the half.
Henrio took a free kick just outside the box in the 47th minute and placed perfect pass to the head of McRae to tie the game 1-1. The Silverswords attempted to retaliate with a shot by Yoshinori Tamukai, but Wittman saved it to the keep the game level.
After BYU-Hawaii took the lead, Mason Reid looked to extend it in the 77th minute, but his shot was unable to find the back of the net as Buescherhoff got his hands on it.
Chaminade tried to fight back in the final minutes, but shots by Aires and Nick Kraus couldn't make it through.
BYU-Hawaii will play its final preseason game on Thursday against Simon Fraser at 12:30 p.m. HST. Live stats will be available online.
