Seasdiers top Eagles in high-scoring game

IRVINE, Calif. – Pawel Dregan powered the offense as BYU-Hawaii men's soccer won 5-3 over Concordia Irvine on Tuesday at Eagles Field.

Dregan scored one goal and added two assists to give BYU-Hawaii (7-7, 5-4 PacWest) the advantage. Jake McRae recorded two goals to bring his season total to 12. Steven Rodriguez and Besser Davila each contributed a goal for the Seasiders. Concordia (4-8-1, 4-4-1 PacWest) was led by goals from Isaac Gettis, Jeremy Gordon and Jacob Rodewald.

BYU-Hawaii finished at 15 shots with nine on goal, while the Eagles' seven shots were all on goal.

After two lead changes and two ties, Kyle Oertel found Davila in open space just outside the box and Davila put his shot high into the right corner to give the Seasiders the 4-3 lead in the 64th minute. Mark Stanley (2-2) entered in the second half and kept BYU-Hawaii ahead when he saved a shot from Concordia in the 74th minute.

In the 2nd minute of the game, Dregan took an open shot from 30 yards, which cleared the keeper's hands and deflected off the post and into the netting for the first goal of the game.

Concordia tied the game with a bending shot by Gettis in the 11th minute that sailed past BYU-Hawaii's Jaden Epplette into the back-right corner of the net. The Eagles struck again to take the 2-1 lead in the 26th minute when Rodewald placed a shot in the upper-left corner of the net.

The Seasiders did not back down, pressing for an equalizer before halftime. Abraham Garcia put a perfect cross into the box in the 35th minute and McRae headed the ball over Jordan Brinkley's finger tips to tie the game 2-2.

Three more shots on goal by Concordia attempted to regain their lead before halftime, but Epplette secured the saves for the Seasiders and kept the game tied.

Rodriguez gave BYU-Hawaii the 3-2 advantage with a header into the middle of the net after a well-placed corner kick by Dregan in the 48th minute. One minute later, the Eagles answered back with their own header from Gordon to tie the game 3-3.

McRae capitalized on a breakaway shot to the bottom right corner after an assist from Dregan to give the Seasiders an insurance goal in the 87th minute.
