LAIE, Hawaii – Junior midfielder Besser Davila propelled BYU-Hawaii men's soccer to a 2-0 victory over Hawaii-Hilo on Saturday at the BYU-Hawaii Soccer Field.
Junior forwards Jake McRae and Pawel Dregan led the Seasiders (2-2) with two shots each, while freshman midfielder Mason Reid contributed one assist. The Vulcans (1-3) outshot BYU-Hawaii 6-5, but freshman goalie Mark Stanley (1-1) grabbed all three of their shots on net.
The Seasiders opened the scoring when Reid found Davila just outside the box for a right-footed shot that grazed the bottom of the crossbar and fell into the back netting for a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute.
BYU-Hawaii pressed in the sixth minute when Dregan crossed the ball to McRae in the center of the box, but the header was high.
Hilo attempted to tie the game in the 28th minute on Jacob Laporte's kick from the penalty spot, but Stanley was able to kick the ball away to keep the Seasiders in the lead.
McRae had another opportunity with a header in the 37th minute, but the ball went over the crossbar and out.
Junior forward Kyle Oertel drew a penalty kick after being taken down in the box in the 65th minute. Dregan converted with a ball into the left side of the goal to make it a 2-0 lead.
Cassidy Dixon attempted to close the gap for the Vulcans with a header in the 72nd minute, but the ball went wide right. BYU-Hawaii's back line held strong the remainder of the game to preserve the shutout.
BYU-Hawaii will open Pacific West Conference play against Academy of Art on Sept. 28 at 3 p.m. HST. Live stats will be available online.
