LAIE, Hawaii – Seniors Colby Bauer and Chad Nahoolewa connected on a corner to send off the seniors of BYU-Hawaii men's soccer with a 1-1 tie against the University of Hawaii at Hilo on Saturday at the BYU-Hawaii soccer field.
BYU-Hawaii started the game with good offensive pressure which kept the ball on the Vulcan side of the pitch for the first ten minutes. However, a long through ball found Jamie Sporcic in the eighth minute and Hawaii Hilo was able to draw first blood with a goal.
Seconds later Pawel Dregan found himself with room to take a shot, but the ball sailed high. In the fourteenth minute the Vulcans answered the Seasiders with a high shot of their own.
Good communication by senior Landon Southwick, senior David Urbina and junior Abe Garcia stopped an advancing attack by Hawaii Hilo and dissolved another chance for a Vulcans goal before they had the opportunity to get a shot off.
BYU-Hawaii found their equalizing opportunity when a perfectly placed corner by Nahoolewa found Bauer inside the box and he was able to head it into the net between the Vulcan keeper and two defenders tying the game at 1-1 in the 25th minute.
From then on the Seasiders where able to maintain possession of the ball winning a corner kick in the 31st minute and Green was able to get off a bicycle kick, but the shot went high.
Both teams tested each other out for the rest of the half, trying new plays, but neither gained the advantage sending the game to halftime on a tie.
The second half was a very physical game with both team committing multiple fouls.
Seven minutes into the second half Ian McBride took a corner kick for the Vulcans, but any advancement was halted by the BYU-Hawaii defense.
A well placed pass into the box by sophomore Matthew Roberts in front of the goal was inches ahead of Green's foot preventing a Seasider goal in the 58th minute.
A corner by Romy Lakip found a few BYU-Hawaii players who were able to get shots off, but were all blocked by the mass of bodies in front of the keeper.
In the 73rd minute, a corner by Dregan found Southwick who was able to take a shot that went high.
Neither team had a scoring opportunity for the remainder of regulation to send the game into extra time.
A corner taken by Mike Moreno in the 92nd minute was countered by the Vulcans as they quickly found themselves on the Seasider side of the pitch, but they were stonewalled by sophomore Jershon Baldamero.
A red card awarded to a Hawaii Hilo player left the Seasiders to play a man up with five minutes left in the game. Another well-placed corner by Nahoolewa found the head of Bauer again, but the Vulcan goalkeeper was able to save it to end the game at a 1-1 tie.
