FRESNO, Calif. – BYU-Hawaii men's soccer came back from a first half deficit to tie Fresno Pacific 3-3 on Monday afternoon at Ramirez Field.
The Sunbirds (9-4-1, 7-2-1 PacWest) applied offensive pressure early with a shot on goal in the fifth minute. In the 15th minute, a pass inside the box found the foot of Renato Bustamente who put the ball into the back of the net to give the Sunbirds a 1-0 lead.
Fresno Pacific maintained possession inside BYU-Hawaii's side of the field getting off five shots and two corner kicks over the following six minutes. The pressure paid off again after Bustamente put the ball into the corner net in the 26th minute to extend the Sunbird lead.
BYU-Hawaii (6-5-4, 6-1-3 PacWest) was unable to find much room among a tough Fresno Pacific defense in the first half getting off four shots, but none challenged the keeper.
The Seasiders used halftime adjustments to slow the Sunbirds offensive pressure and generate some of their own. Kelly Hess found Jace Green for a cross to Romy Lakip who slotted home the goal in the 54th minute. Two minutes later a corner kick from Lakip found Ty O'Connor's head, but the shot was deflected up by the keeper and Green finished with header into the back of the net to tie the game up at two.
A through ball found Pawel Dregan behind the defense who beat the keeper 1-on-1 to break the tie and give the Seasiders the lead in the 79th minute. The Sunbirds battled back with a free kick in the 88th minute which found the head of Bustamente to complete his hat trick and tie the game 3-3.
Green and Dregan put shots on goal in the final minute, but Fresno Pacific's keeper came up with two saves to send the game to overtime. Dregan had the last legitimate scoring chance for either team saved in the 106th minute as the game ended tied.
