SAN FRANCISCO – Jace Green scored his eighth goal of the season to help BYU-Hawaii to a 1-1 tie with Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday morning at Koret Field.
Both teams were on the offensive attack as soon as the game began. In the third minute, a corner kick by Chad Nahoolewa for BYU-Hawaii (6-5-3, 6-1-2 PacWest) found Zak Epplette who was able to head it towards goal, but it was saved by Notre Dame's (8-5-2, 6-2-1 PacWest) keeper.
A foul by the Seasiders in the 11th minute set up a free kick for the Argonauts, which Robert Hines was able to capitalize on with the header to the near post to make it 1-0.
In the 25th minute, a corner for Notre Dame once again found Hines, but was ineffective as the ball soared high over the crossbar.
Three minutes later, the Seasiders would respond with a header of their own as a cross to the back post by Abraham Garcia was redirected into the net by Green giving BYU-Hawaii the 1-1 tie.
Romy Lakip got one last shot on goal, which was saved, before sending both teams to halftime.
BYU-Hawaii's back four were able to hold Notre Dame to only one shot on goal throughout the first half.
Right out of the break a hard shot by Epplette was once again saved by the opposing keeper. The Agronauts retaliated with a shot of their own, which was in turn skillfully saved by Chris Pineda in the 54th minute.
A dangerous corner from Lakip a few minutes later found Colby Bauer inside the box who was able to make contact, but the header went wide.
A crucial save by Pineda in the 68th minute kept the Seasiders alive and helped regain possession of the ball.
Both teams then changed possession of the ball and got off shots, but neither was able to find the opening and gain the advantage sending the game into extra time.
The biggest opportunity for BYU-Hawaii came in the 93rd minute as a shot from Pawell Dregan in the frame was saved by the Notre Dame keeper.
The last chance for the Seasiders to come away from the victory came from Dregan again in the 103rd minute, but the shot went wide ending the game at a 1-1 tie.
BYU-Hawaii will wrap up their road trip with a matchup against Fresno Pacific on Monday at 5 p.m. PDT. Live stats will be available online.
