SAN FRANCISCO – The back four of BYU-Hawaii men's soccer defended the pitch for the Seasiders as they shut out Academy of Arts 3-0 at the Academy of Art's soccer fields.
"We possessed the ball very well and were able to execute our game plan," BYU-Hawaii assistant coach Dan Dummar said. "Academy put up a tough fight in the beginning, but we were able to break them down and dictate the game. Our defense was not predictable and were very organized, which made it easy for us to penetrate from the back and make runs to the middle and wings resulting in goals."
Landon Southwick, Abraham Garcia, Ty O'Connor and David Urbina allowed Academy of Art (4-9, 2-5 PacWest) only one shot on goal, while the BYU-Hawaii (6-5-2, 6-1-1 PacWest) offense put nine shots on frame.
The offensive pressure got to the Academy of Art defense early as a shot on goal by Jace Green in the fourth minute was put into the back of the net by an Urban Knight defender after a deflected save.
Zak Epplette and Green led the Seasiders offense early to get three shots on goal within five minutes to begin the game.
In the 28th minute, forward Jacob Szuch was able to beat the Academy of Art defense and get a shot on goal that Alejandro Escobedo was able to block.
BYU-Hawaii's defense was able to hold the Urban Knight's offense to no shots on goal in the first half.
BYU-Hawaii came out of the halftime with the same mentality that they had in the first half as a through ball from Garcia found Pawel Dregan who beat a defender in the 48th minute and passed it to a rushing Colby Bauer who after one touch put it in the lower right corner of the goal.
Academy of Art's biggest opportunity came in the 66th minute as a corner found Sam McKay who headed it towards the goal, but wasn't able to capitalize as a save from Chris Pineda kept it a 2-0 game.
The Seasider's back four continued to impress as they completely shut down the Urban Knight's offense and did not allow another shot on goal for the rest of the game.
BYU-Hawaii faces Notre Dame de Namur at 11:00 a.m. HST in California. Live stats will be available online.
