REUNION, Fla. – Nicolas Herrera finished tied for 54th Wednesday after the final round of the NCAA Division II Championship and was named a NCAA Division II Ping All-American at the Reunion Watson Course.
All golfers battled through difficult weather conditions on the final day as the area was under a tornado watch. Herrera had a good start with four pars and a bogey on his first five holes, but found himself in trouble with a triple bogey on hole four. He continued to fight and finished with four more pars and two birdies on his way to a 7-over 77 on the day.
Chandler Blanchet of West Florida won the individual title after posting a 3-over 73 on the final day to move to 1 under for the tournament and edge John Coultas of Florida Southern by one stroke.
After the conclusion of the tournament it was announced that Herrera had been named as a first team NCAA Division II Ping All-American after the strongest year for any BYU-Hawaii golfer. Herrera had an in-season streak of 17 round under par and a school record with a single round of 10-under 62 at the Hawaii Challenge. Herrera is a finalist for the Jack Nicklaus Award that will be announced on June 1.
