KAHUKU, Hawaii – No. 11/13 BYU-Hawaii won the 2017 PacWest Men's Golf Championship Wednesday in the last six holes of a highly contested tournament at Turtle Bay Resort's Fazio Course.
California Baptist entered the clubhouse with the lead at 16 under, but the Seasiders closed the gap and Nicolas Herrera and Jacob Godfrey combined to post a 3 under on their final three holes to break the tie and finish at 19-under 845. Dixie State placed third at 9 under and Holy Names was fourth at 7 under par.
Herrera saved his best for last with no bogeys in the final round and carding an eagle on four and birdies on seven and eight with the championship on the line. He finished with a 6-under 66 in the final round and tied for second at 14 under for the tournament. Greg Gonzalez won the individual title with a 16-under 200.
Godfrey also finished strong rebounding from a 1-over 37 on the back nine to post a 3 under on the front nine, including an eagle on the fourth green. He placed sixth with a 9-under 207 and finish on the All-PacWest Tournament Team.
Federico Clausen birdied the eighth hole to tie the match up for BYU-Hawaii and give him a 2-over 74 on the day and tie for 12th with a final score of 2 over. Alex Stulce added a 3 over on the day and his 6 over for the tournament tied him for 22nd on the individual board. Dalton Stanger finished a stroke behind Clausen at 3 over to tie for 15th at the tournament.
BYU-Hawaii clinched an automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals and will find out the remainder of the field Friday.
