HONOLULU – BYU-Hawaii's Brent Grant captured the most prestigious trophy in Hawaii amateur golf defeating Justin Ngan in the finals 5 and 4 Saturday at the 108th Manoa Cup at the Oahu Country Club.
This was the fourth time Grant has participated in the Manoa Cup dating back to his days at Moanalua High School. Grant had previously gone as far as the quarterfinals the last two years, but bested that this year with a strong showing in the six day tournament.
"The course was playing pretty difficult with some bad weather," Grant said. "It wasn't necessarily the best golf I played, but I did what it took to win. I was able to keep [the ball] on the fairway and the green and that kind of wears down your opponents."
Grant made quick work of his opponents in match play trailing for only six of his 104 holes, trailing in only two of his eight matches. Grant began the tournament with a 1-under 70 in the qualifying on Monday to earn the fourth seed heading to match play.
The title builds on a successful freshman season at BYU-Hawaii where he ended the season as the No. 17-ranked golfer in the NCAA Division II by Golfstat. Grant earned the first individual tournament title and helped his team to its first tournament title at the Mustang Intercollegiate this past year. He then helped lead the charge as the Seasiders finished second at the PacWest Championships and moved through the NCAA Regionals to the NCAA Championships in Denver.
"When you play college golf, you're playing against guys who are as serious as you are," Grant said. "It was invaluable experience to play under Bob [Owan] and Ryan [Acosta] with my teammates. They really helped with my thought process and being patient. Early in the season putts weren't falling, but they helped me stay patient and we were able to do some great things."
Grant will look to build on his success again on July 19 at the US Amateur Qualifiers held on the Fazio Course at Turtle Bay. If he qualifies he will participate in the US Amateur Championships August 15-21 at the Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Township, Michigan.
