Seasiders close strong on first day

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Brent Grant finished with his best round of the season to lead No. 24 BYU-Hawaii to second place after the first day at the Mustang Intercollegiate at Palm Valley Golf Club.

The Seasiders finished the first round with an 11-under 277 to tie with No. 28 Dominican. The 11 under was the lowest team score for an individual round in the program's history. BYU-Hawaii added a 6 under in the second round to finish one stroke ahead of the Penguins.

No. 18 University of Colorado Colorado Springs was one stroke behind the leaders at 10 under after the first round, but shot 8 under over the final 18 holes to take the one stroke lead into the final day.

Grant led the field of 100 golfers at 10 under to edge the Mountain Lions' No. 38-ranked Colin Prater. Grant finished with a 7-under 65 in the first round behind a strong front nine with eagles on the second and fifth holes with birdies on the first and eighth. He also finished strong with a birdie on the 14th hole to take the top spot from John Burke of Stanislaus State.

Grant then held on to his lead in the second with a 3-under 69. He was strongest again in the front nine recording three birdies and no bogies. He finished the day with nine birdies, two eagles and three bogies.

Dalton Stanger also finished strong in the first round with a birdie on 17 to finish at 4 under. Stanger had six birdies and only two bogies in the round. Inoka Kahawaii finished a stroke behind Stanger to tie for 11th in the overall standings with a 3-under 69. Kahawaii added a strong second 18 holes finishing at 3 under again. With the Seasiders trailing Dominican by a stroke on the final hole, Kahawaii birdies the par-4 16th to move into a tie for second before the Penguins dropped a stroke on their final hole.

Nicolas Herrera added a 3 over in the first round. Herrera started slow on his second 18, but finished with four birdies in his final six holes to move to 1-under 71. Alex Stulce rounded out the Seasider scores in the second round following a very consistent round including a birdie at the 15th hole to go with 15 even par holes.

BYU-Hawaii will wrap up its play during the final round tomorrow morning at Palm Valley Golf Club.
