Seasiders fall to Seawolves

ANCHORAGE – BYU-Hawaii men's basketball fell 75-50 to Alaska Anchorage Friday at the Alaska Airlines Center.

Tanner Nelson led the Seasiders (0-2) with 18 points and six rebounds. D McCleary went 9-10 from the free throw line to contribute 13 total points.

Four Seawolves (3-2) ended the night in double digits, led by Sekou Wiggs at 21 points, while Corey Hammell had a game-high 12 rebounds.

Alaska Anchorage shot 45 percent from the field, holding BYU-Hawaii to 34 percent. BYU-Hawaii finished with six blocks, but Alaska Anchorage outrebounded the Seasiders 47-17.

Connor Devine led Alaska Anchorage on an 11-2 run with two layups and a free throw to give the Seawolves a 15-9 advantage six minutes into the half. Nelson answered with two jumpers to close the deficit to 17-14 with 11:14 remaining, but a 10-1 run powered by Hammell allowed Alaska Anchorage to widen their lead to 29-17 at 5:40.

The teams traded points as the Seawolves held onto their 37-24 edge into the locker room.

Devine sparked an 8-point run with back-to-back layups to push his team ahead 47-28 with 12:29 on the clock. Four consecutive free throws by Seasider McCleary made it a 58-40 game, but the Seawolves kept control, as they didn't let their lead fall below 20 points for the remainder of the game.
