LAIE, Hawaii – Cory Lange scored his career high and led BYU-Hawaii to an 82-64 victory over Notre Dame de Namur Thursday night in the Cannon Activities Center.
Lange led all players with his record of 36 points, shooting 75 percent from the field and connecting on 4 of his 5 threes. Justin Yamzon recorded 15 points on the night. Ian Harward had 13 points, seven rebounds and tied his season-high of five blocks. Justin Park also had 13 points with six rebounds and two blocks.
Jalen Young led Notre Dame de Namur (3-19, 2-13 PacWest) with 24 points, three rebounds, a block and a steal. Korey Serna had 15 points and five boards for the Argonauts.
BYU-Hawaii (13-9, 10-7 PacWest) shot 56.9 percent as a team from the field, holding Notre Dame de Namur to 41.3 percent. The Seasiders had 36 rebounds and 22 assists to the Argonauts' 31 and 13.
The first few minutes of the game were a close battle until a three from Yamzon sent the Seasiders on an 11-point run, making it 15-5 with 13:7 remaining. Young made a three for the Argonauts in an attempt to answer BYU-Hawaii's lead but Yamzon responded with another swish to hold their lead.
Notre Dame de Namur fought to close the gap to six before BYU-Hawaii went on a 6-0 run to extend their lead to 32-20 with 5:41 left in the first half.
Justin Park grabbed an offensive board and finished with a put-back to end the first half with the Seasiders leading 39-29.
Lange started the Seasiders off on the right foot in the second half with a 3-pointer less than a minute in. Moments later, he secured an and-one play with a made free throw, putting the Seasiders up 45-31. The Argonauts responded with a jumper from Tre'Shaw King-Dunbar, but shortly thereafter Lange scored another layup to give him six points in two minutes.
A big block and a three from Ian Harward gave the Seasiders momentum with 16:35 remaining in the second half. Justin Park blocked another Argonaut shot and Lange made another three to give the Seasiders a 57-44 advantage with 12:15 in the game. Young scored another basket for Notre Dame before Park hit a jump shot of his own and Lange hit back-to-back threes, putting the Seasiders up 71-55 with six minutes to go.
Another block by Harward gave Scott Friel a fast break opportunity, where a behind-the-back pass connected with Lange to give him a wide-open shot and make the score 76-56 with 3:38 left in the game.
With 2:30 left, Lange got fouled on a made lay-up, hitting his free throw to finish with a three-point play. Yamzon hit another three with 1:22 left on the clock, leaving the Seasiders with the lead 82-61.
The Seasiders will be back in action next Saturday, February 20 against the Chaminade Silverswords in Honolulu.
