Friel and Lange lead charge against Sea Lions

SAN DIEGO – Scott Friel and Cory Lange both recorded double-doubles to lead BYU-Hawaii men's basketball to an 87-71 victory over Point Loma Nazarene University on Saturday at Golden Gymnasium.

Friel had 20 points, 12 rebounds and six assists, while Lange added 20 points and 10 boards for the Seasiders (12-6, 9-4 PacWest). Tanner Nelson (13), Ian Harward (11) and Justin Park (10) also chipped in double-figure scoring for BYU-Hawaii.

Josh Rodriguez led the Sea Lions (11-8, 6-6 PacWest) with 16 points and fives assists, while teammate Tanner Lancona added 14 points and nine rebounds.

BYU-Hawaii shot 50 percent from the field and 39.1 percent from behind the arc, holding Point Loma to 47.5 percent and 33.3 percent, respectively. The Seasiders held a 43-25 rebounding advantage and also finished perfect (12-12) from the charity stripe.

BYU-Hawaii only trailed for 12 seconds, when Nelson sparked a 9-0 run that included a 3-pointer from Ian Harward to give the Seasiders an early 11-3 lead. The Sea Lions kept the game interesting cutting the lead to four on a 7-3 run, but Justin Park scored six points during a 10-1 response for BYU-Hawaii to take a 24-11 lead halfway through the first.

The teams traded baskets the rest of the way and the Seasiders took a 47-37 lead into the locker room.

Rodriguez cut the Seasider lead back to single digits in the first possession of the second quarter, but the the Sea Lions were unable to get any closer than six points. Nelson hit a 3-pointer and Lange added a layup to put BYU-Hawaii back up by 11 with 18 minutes remaining.

After seesaw scoring over the next 10 minutes, Friel scored four points and Lange added a 3 to give the Seasiders their largest lead at 74-57 with seven minutes left on the clock. Friel scored the next eight points for BYU-Hawaii and Gabriel Andrade ended the scoring with a steal and layup to give the Seasiders the victory.
