LONG BEACH, Calif. – BYU-Hawaii men's basketball fell in the season opening exhibition to Long Beach State 91-57 at Walter Pyramid.
Justin Yamzon led all players with 20 points, converting on 40 percent of his shots from behind the arc. Long Beach State had 5 players end in double figures, led by 16 points from Roschon Prince and A.J. Spencer.
Long Beach State jumped off to a quick 14-2 start that was sparked by University of Maryland transfer Nick Faust. Faust scored seven points as the 49ers jumped off to the quick start.
Halfway through the first half the Seasiders found themselves in a 29-9 hole. Yamzon hit back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the Long Beach lead.
Within the last two minutes of the first half Yamzon and senior Scott Friel provided seven buckets taking them to halftime trailing 47-26.
Similar to the first half the 49ers (1-0) went on a 14-4 run out of halftime to extend their lead. The 49ers would cruise as they were able to hold on to get the victory.
A scary moment happened late in the second half as Yamzon went down with what seemed to be a knee injury. He would return and seems to be alright.
The Seasiders will be back in action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. as they take on Western Washington. Live stats and video will be available online.
