LAIE, Hawaii – BYU-Hawaii men's basketball began its season leading the entire way in a 94-73 exhibition win over Saint Katherine College on Saturday evening at the Cannon Activities Center.
Coro recorded a game-high 23 points and four steals. Jordan Stone added 17 points and nine rebounds, including six on the offensive glass. Daniel Berger and Ian Harward joined them in double figures with 18 and 13 points respectively. Scott Friel added 13 rebounds.
BYU-Hawaii shot 53.4 percent from the field and held Saint Katherine College to 43.9 percent. The Seasiders also had a 20 point advantage on free throws made.
The Seasiders started the game with a 7-0, featuring a reverse-layup by Daniel Berger, a Pablo Coro 3-point jump shot, and a Jordan Stone dunk. After the Firebirds closed back within two, Berger made four consecutive free throws to start another 7-0 run ending with an Ian Harward made a jump shot.
A five-point run by BYU-Hawaii pushed the lead to 12 with less than seven minutes left in the first half. The Firebirds slowly cut into the Seasiders lead with several small runs to make it 37-32 with just over three minutes remaining. Coro went on an individual 11-0 run to end the half with the Seasiders ahead 48-32.
After the teams traded turnovers to start of the second half, Berger brought the crowd to its feet with an alley-oop dunk from Robbie Mitchell to put the Seasiders up by 18 points. Within five minutes Stone added a dunk, a jump shot and three free throws to push the score to 61-37 with 15 minutes left in the game.
The Seasiders continued the charge as Harward scored six points in a 7-0 run to put the Seasiders ahead by 23 with just under 10 minutes remaining. The teams traded points for the remainder of the game.
BYU-Hawaii will return to the court to take on Central Washington in the PacWest/GNAC Challenge at 7:30 p.m. HST on Friday at the Cannon Activities Center. The game will be broadcast live on BYUtv.
